AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund sparks controversy over remigration remarks

Following the AfD's significant victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, where the party secured 43.8 percent of the vote and 39 seats, AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund has sparked intense political controversy. During a discussion regarding a planned Israeli weapons factory in the region, Siegmund stated that the party does not condemn weapons production because resources would be required for future “remigration and deportation offensives.”

Siegmund later clarified his remarks, stating that his comments referred to a broad range of security equipment—including vehicles and protective technology used by police and the armed forces—rather than strictly weapons. Despite this clarification, political opponents, including SPD parliamentary group leader Katja Pähle, accused him of implying the use of violence for political purposes.

The election result has also triggered internal criticism within the CDU, with labor wing leader Dennis Radtke calling Chancellor Friedrich Merz's current strategy a failure. Additionally, Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig has urged civil servants to resist any unlawful instructions that might arise from a potential AfD-led state government, emphasizing their constitutional oath.
