AfD Leads Union by Eight Points in New German Poll

A weekly Insa "Sonntagstrend" poll for Bild am Sonntag finds the far‑right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) at 29 % of the vote, eight points ahead of the Union (CDU/CSU) at 21 %. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens each hold 13 %, the Left 10 %, while the BSW and FDP sit at 4 % each and other parties total 6 %.

The same survey shows the German public divided on a possible ban of the AfD – 40 % favor a ban, 45 % oppose it, and 15 % are undecided – and on the “brand‑wall” concept of refusing coalition with the AfD, with 42 % supporting the measure and 39 % rejecting it.

Parallel to the poll results, the AfD’s federal party congress took place in Erfurt. Party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla were reaffirmed for another term. The event attracted tens of thousands of demonstrators, with approximately 30‑50 000 protesters and around 10 000 participants in blockades, some of which temporarily halted traffic on the A71. Police reported the protests remained largely peaceful.
