AfD wins regional election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) has secured a significant victory in the regional elections of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, finishing first with approximately 38.2% of the vote. This result represents a 21.5 percentage point increase compared to the previous election.

AfD co-leader Alice Weidel claimed the party has replaced the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) as Germany’s ‘people’s party’ following the CDU’s poor performance, which saw the party fail to meet the 5% threshold in the region. AfD co-chair Tino Chrupalla characterized the CDU as a ‘pseudo-conservative’ party and suggested the electoral shift is part of an unstoppable ‘blue wave.’

The campaign focused heavily on economic concerns, specifically rising energy costs. The AfD has advocated for the reactivation of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines to restore access to Russian natural gas, a move that contrasts with the current reliance on more expensive liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable sources.
