AfD Youth Leader Michael Schumann Injured During Schwerin Demonstration

On 2 August 2026, a clash on the outskirts of a demonstration organized by the AfD youth wing Generation Deutschland in Schwerin left Michael Schumann, the state chairman of the organization in Hamburg, with a bleeding head wound. The incident occurred before the rally titled “Tag der Deutschen Jugend” began, as Schumann walked from his car to the meeting point.

Police reported that about 400 AfD youth participants and roughly 500 counter‑demonstrators were present. The AfD immediately blamed Antifa for the attack, while police said three suspects were identified but did not confirm any group’s involvement. A large police presence, including officers from Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, Saxony and North Rhine‑Westphalia, responded. Schumann received on‑site medical aid; the seriousness of his injuries and whether he was taken to a hospital were not confirmed. After the assault, opponents attempted to block the procession, prompting a short‑term change to the demonstration route.
