AfD youth leader Michael Schumann injured in Schwerin protest
On August 1, 2024, the AfD youth organization Generation Deutschland held its "Tag der Deutschen Jugend" on the Alten Garten in Schwerin, expecting around 500 participants. Simultaneously, several counter‑demonstrations were organized, with authorities estimating up to 1,000 protesters. The city prepared for road closures, police checkpoints and possible disruptions to traffic and commerce.
During the event, masked left‑wing activists attacked Michael Schumann, the Hamburg state chairman of Generation Deutschland. Video footage shows Schumann with a bleeding face and a cut eyebrow after being struck with a spray and repeatedly assaulted. Police confirmed that a member of Generation Deutschland was injured and received medical attention. The incident was accompanied by chants such as "Nazischweine" from the attackers. Despite the violence, Schumann posted a video stating he would continue with the demonstration.
Police deployed a large presence in Schwerin, and the city warned residents and visitors of possible detours and delays. Both the AfD youth rally and the counter‑protests proceeded under heightened security.
