Afenyo-Markin defends scrutiny of Ghana's GoldBod implementation

Ghanaian Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has clarified that his criticisms regarding the GoldBod and the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme are directed at institutional implementation rather than specific individuals.

Afenyo-Markin stated that while the Minority supports the initiative—originally introduced under former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to stabilize the economy using gold resources—there are significant concerns regarding financial losses. He noted that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised concerns about these losses and argued for a thorough investigation.

Addressing arguments that reported losses might actually be exchange rate fluctuations on Bank of Ghana accounts, Afenyo-Markin called for patience. He indicated that a planned parliamentary probe in October will serve as the platform to establish the facts and present all perspectives.
