Scottish aid worker Elisabeth‑Jane Ross found dead in Athens; Afghan suspect Sharif Ahmadzai detained

Elisabeth‑Jane Ross, a 38‑year‑old Scottish psychotherapist and Christian aid volunteer, was discovered dead inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of Athens on 18 July 2026, three days after being reported missing. Police identified her from fingerprints and her family described her as kind, principled and selfless.

Sharif Ahmadzai, a 26‑year‑old Afghan professional boxer who arrived in Greece as a refugee, was arrested and charged with homicide with intent, robbery and illegal weapons possession. He appeared in court, exercised his right to silence and denied killing Ross, claiming he found her already dead in a bathroom and panicked, moving the body into a suitcase. The court ordered his pre‑trial detention while investigations continue.

The suspect’s wife, Alaina Hall, testified that she noticed strange behaviour, unexplained cash and messages sent from Ross’s phone that did not match her style. An American couple who had “adopted” Ahmadzai when he was a teenager in Lesbos expressed shock and heartbreak at the allegations. The Red Cross removed a 2016 video that had featured Ahmadzai’s refugee story out of respect for the victim’s family.
