Taliban officials' visit to Moldova sparks political controversy
A delegation from the Afghan Ministry of Agriculture, representing the Taliban‑run government, arrived in Chișinău on 3 August. The visit was arranged after a Moldovan agribusiness requested assistance to expand exports to Afghanistan, and State Secretary Vasile Sarban secured visas for the three officials.
Moldovan authorities issued the visas in accordance with legal procedures, but the episode exposed gaps in inter‑agency coordination and a lack of awareness of the country's foreign‑policy stance toward the Taliban regime. President Maia Sandu called the incident “shameful” and said disciplinary sanctions were forthcoming. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan described the visit as “embarrassing and unacceptable,” noting that the decision was made without the required security consultation.
Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi affirmed that no legal violations were found, but stressed the difference between legality and political opportunity. He announced a disciplinary commission to review the decision chain. Moldova does not recognize the Taliban government, and while EU sanctions target specific Taliban individuals and entities, agricultural trade is not prohibited. The controversy has triggered calls for resignations and a review of the visa‑granting process.
