Afghanistan: 18-year-old woman seeks divorce amid Taliban rule

An 18-year-old woman in northern Afghanistan is seeking a divorce from her husband, alleging months of physical abuse and violence. The case, documented by the BBC, highlights the restrictive social environment under Taliban rule five years after their return to power.

During a meeting with Abdullah Sarchandi, a former Taliban military commander and current high-ranking official, the woman—referred to by the BBC as Touba—refused to stay in the marriage. Sarchandi attempted to persuade her to remain, questioning her future prospects and suggesting she would lose her dignity. The woman responded, “Governor, my honor and dignity have already been destroyed.”

Sarchandi later remarked to other male officials and elders that women are “brainless” and “inferior in intelligence,” drawing laughter from those present. The divorce process is further complicated by financial demands; the woman's husband is reportedly requesting a dowry amount four times higher than the original marriage payment, a condition her family refuses to meet. While Sarchandi suggested providing the woman with a separate room and threatened the husband with imprisonment if violence continues, the family remains unconvinced.
