Afghanistan faces worsening humanitarian and rights crisis
Five years after the Taliban returned to power, Afghanistan faces a deepening humanitarian, economic, and healthcare crisis. According to the NGO Emergency, 21.9 million people require humanitarian aid, half of whom are women and children. The crisis is exacerbated by regional tensions with Pakistan and Iran, which have disrupted essential trade routes for food and medicine.
International funding has declined sharply, with the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan receiving only 41% of necessary funds. This shortfall has forced 445 health facilities to close or suspend activities, leaving over 3 million people without essential care. Specifically, 206 of these closures are attributed to the freezing of USAID funding in January 2025.
Human rights conditions continue to deteriorate, particularly for women and girls. Canadian officials and UN Women report systematic repression, including the institutionalization of decrees that bar girls from education beyond sixth grade and restrict women's ability to work, travel, and access justice. UN Women noted that over 2.6 million girls have been deprived of secondary education since 2021.
