Afghanistan Foreign Minister and UNHCR discuss refugee returns

Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met with Arafat Jamal, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative in Afghanistan, to discuss the safe and voluntary return of Afghan refugees. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the Afghan government and the UNHCR to improve conditions and provide assistance to returnees upon their arrival.

The meeting addressed the necessity of coordinating efforts between international organizations and relevant countries to support the reintegration of refugees. This comes amid reports of increased deportations of Afghans from neighboring nations.

In a separate communication, Muttaqi held a phone call with Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, to discuss cooperation between the Islamic Emirate and the United Nations, as well as the Doha Process.

Recent operational data from the High Commission for Addressing Returnees' Issues indicated that 201 Afghan families, totaling 1,002 individuals, returned from Pakistan and Iran on a single Saturday, passing through various border crossings including Torkham, Spin Boldak, Silk Bridge, and Islam Qala.
