Afghanistan girls defy Taliban ban through secret schools

Thousands of clandestine schools are operating across Afghanistan as girls attempt to bypass the Taliban’s 2022 ban on formal secondary education. Nearly 2.5 million Afghan girls are currently barred from attending school beyond the sixth grade, leaving them with limited options such as religious instruction or private home tutoring.

These secret educational programs, run by parents, teachers, and principals, serve as a vital connection for students to avoid total social isolation. However, participants face the constant risk of arrest. Some students have even reported failing the sixth grade intentionally to remain in a classroom setting for as long as possible.

While some local officials reportedly tolerate these schools to protect their own daughters, Taliban leadership has shown no inclination to rescind the ban. Educators and parents warn that the ongoing prohibition could cause permanent damage to the social fabric of the country and the future prospects of an entire generation.
