Afghanistan: UN warns of worsening human rights and gender apartheid
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has warned that the situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating as the Taliban increases repressive restrictions on the population. Türk described the systematic exclusion of women and girls from public life as ‘gender apartheid,’ noting that over two million women and girls have been denied access to secondary and higher education since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Beyond gender-based restrictions, the UN reported that at least 449 individuals were subjected to corporal punishment by Taliban authorities during the first half of the year. Arrests have also been documented regarding dress codes, beard length, and the consumption of music. The UN also noted ongoing human rights violations against religious minorities and former government officials, alongside increasing media censorship.
The humanitarian crisis is being compounded by a significant decline in international aid and the forced return of migrants to a country facing extreme poverty, food insecurity, and lack of access to essential services.
