Afghanistan: Taliban face rising resistance in Badakhshan

As the Taliban mark five years of returning to power in Afghanistan, the group faces significant security challenges in the remote Badakhshan province. Armed anti-Taliban resistance groups, including the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan led by Ahmad Massoud and the Afghanistan Freedom Front led by Gen. Yasin Zia, have been targeting Taliban positions in the mountainous region.

The province is also seeing activity from smaller local groups like Sipahiyan-i-Mihan and recent defections from former Taliban commanders. Badakhshan is a strategically important area due to its large population, ethnic Tajik majority, and valuable natural resources, including gold and lapis lazuli deposits.

This instability follows the chaotic final days of the US military withdrawal in August 2021. During that period, the collapse of President Ashraf Ghani’s government led to the Taliban seizing Kabul, while US and allied forces maintained control of Hamid Karzai International Airport to conduct a massive air evacuation of diplomats, foreign nationals, and Afghan allies.
