Afghanistan: Taliban regime continues systemic oppression of women

Under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, women continue to face severe systemic restrictions and violence. In northern Afghanistan, Governor Abdullah Sarchandi recently met with an 18-year-old woman seeking a divorce due to months of physical abuse. During the meeting, Sarchandi dismissed the woman's intelligence, referring to women as “brainless” and “lacking in intellect,” remarks that were met with laughter from officials. The legal process for divorce remains difficult, as it often requires the husband's consent, and financial disputes regarding dowry reimbursements further complicate the case.

Reports also highlight the extreme violence used against women under the fundamentalist rule. Historical accounts, such as the 2015 stoning execution of 19-year-old Ruhsana in Ghor province, illustrate the brutality faced by those who defy forced marriages or social codes. Ruhsana was executed after being accused of sex outside of marriage following her attempt to flee an arranged marriage. These incidents underscore the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the lack of legal protections for women in the country.
