Afghanistan women awarded 2026 Chatham House Prize

The London-based think-tank Chatham House has awarded the 2026 Chatham House Prize to the women of Afghanistan. The award recognizes their “courage and resilience in the face of systematic gender persecution” and their role in embodying a broader movement for women’s rights.

Since the Taliban returned to power five years ago, women and girls in Afghanistan have faced increasing restrictions, including exclusion from secondary and higher education, limitations on employment, and restricted freedom of movement. Despite these challenges, women across the country have continued to resist through protests, advocacy, and efforts to maintain access to education.

Bronwen Maddox, Director and Chief Executive of Chatham House, stated that the recipients have shown extraordinary courage against systematic efforts to exclude them from public life. The prize is intended to honor those who make significant contributions to the improvement of international relations.
