AFL and GAA officials meet to strengthen sporting ties
Senior officials from the Australian Football League (AFL) and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) met at Croke Park to discuss strengthening the relationship between the two sporting organizations. AFL Chief Operating Officer Tom Harley, accompanied by Greg Swann and Tristan Salter, met with GAA President Jarlath Burns, Director General Tom Ryan, and Feargal McGill to explore collaborative opportunities.
A primary focus of the discussions included the potential return of the International Rules series, which has not been held since 2017. The leaders also addressed the recruitment of Irish players to the AFL, proposing new protocols to govern recruitment, increase transparency between the leagues, and centralize information.
The meeting follows recent high-profile player movements, including Donegal’s Finbarr Roarty signing with Collingwood and Kobe McDonald joining St Kilda. The AFL-GAA pathway relies on the athletic similarities between the two codes, such as kicking ability and aerial skills, though players must adapt to the different physical demands of Australian rules football.
