AFL finals rules for drawn matches

The Australian Football League (AFL) employs specific protocols for drawn matches during the finals series that differ from the regular home-and-away season. While regular-season draws result in both teams receiving two points, drawn finals require extra time to determine a winner.

If a match is tied at the end of the fourth quarter, teams receive a six-minute and 30-second break before playing two three-minute halves of extra time. Teams change ends between these halves, but play resumes immediately without a break. If the scores remain tied after these periods, the process repeats until a winner is decided.

Regarding player rotations, teams are granted 10 additional interchange rotations per three-minute period of extra time. These rotations do not carry over between periods and must be used within their allotted time.
