AFL releases final two home-and-away rounds and wildcard schedule for 2026 season
The Australian Football League (AFL) announced the fixtures for the last two rounds (Round 23 and Round 24) of its 2026 home-and-away season, including the inaugural wildcard round. The schedule features several double‑headers that pair men’s AFL matches with AFLW games, such as North Melbourne vs Geelong and Richmond vs St Kilda at Marvel Stadium, and the first instance of two men’s matches on the same day at the MCG. Notable matchups include Essendon versus Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium, Sydney hosting North Melbourne, and Hawthorn travelling to Western Australia to play West Coast. The women’s season will also see a standalone Thursday match between Hawthorn and Melbourne and a series of double‑headers across venues.
Fastbreak AI’s chief scheduling officer, Canadian engineer Rick Stone, explained that the AFL fixture is among the world’s most complex sports schedules, ranking in the top ten globally. He has been involved in AFL scheduling for two decades after a chance meeting with a league executive on a Michigan bus. Stone noted that the league’s use of ladder‑based opponent selection, multiple home grounds, special rounds and travel limits creates over 400 rule sets governing the timetable.
A local AFL Sydney podcast previewed the implications of the Round 14 results and previewed Round 15 matchups across the Premier and Division One competitions, highlighting clubs such as Manly Warringah Wolves, UTS Bats, North Shore Bombers and Sydney University as they vie for finals positions.
