AFL to introduce rule changes following time-wasting loophole

The AFL is expected to introduce rule changes to prevent time-wasting tactics following an incident involving Fremantle forward Patrick Voss. During a recent win over Geelong, Voss utilized a loophole in the rules to exhaust the remaining clock. While players have 30 seconds to begin their approach to a shot at goal, there is currently no limit on how long they can take to kick once the approach has started.

Voss began his approach within the 30-second window but took 19 seconds to complete his run-up and kick, leaving only six seconds on the clock. Similar incidents have been noted earlier this year with Carlton’s Lewis Young and in lower leagues such as the VAFA Under-19 South Division 3 grand final.

Following the incident, the AFL met to discuss the matter, with reports indicating that a rule change will be implemented ahead of next season to address these ‘unfair’ tactics.
