Afobaka hydroelectric plant modernization delay limits power supply
The electricity supply for Greater Paramaribo is facing constraints due to delays in the modernization of the Afobaka hydroelectric power plant. Currently, only five of the six turbines are operational, limiting the output from the plant to a maximum of 130 megawatts, compared to the normal capacity of 160 megawatts.
According to Staatsolie Power Company Suriname (SPCS) Director Eddy Frankel, the reduction is caused by a delay in replacing older turbines with more efficient models. The first turbine, originally scheduled to be operational by July 1, has faced a two-month delay from the supplier and is now expected to be available in the first week of October.
To compensate for this shortfall, Energiebedrijven Suriname (EBS) has increased power delivery from the Tout Lui Faut thermal plant. Since August 1, the thermal plant has been providing an average of 60 megawatts, exceeding the contractually agreed 50 megawatts. This supply is expected to increase further to a maximum of 70 megawatts to maintain reliability during peak demand hours.
