Africa advances financial integration through new payment systems and credit rating agency
The East African Community (EAC) is moving from the planning phase to the practical implementation of a regional cross-border payment system. Following an extraordinary meeting of central bank representatives, the EAC has established a roadmap to build an integrated, secure, and inclusive regional payment ecosystem. The plan is built on four pillars: governance, legal and regulatory frameworks, infrastructure, and capacity building and inclusivity.
Simultaneously, the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), an initiative of the African Union, will launch Africa’s first continental credit rating agency in Mauritius on October 5. This move aims to provide an alternative to global agencies like Fitch, Moody’s, and S&P Global. African leaders have argued that international ratings often fail to reflect local economic realities, leading to unfairly high borrowing costs for the continent.
Together, these developments represent significant efforts toward African financial independence and regional economic integration.
