Africa carbon markets move toward investment and transaction phase

Africa’s carbon markets are transitioning from policy development toward active implementation and transaction delivery. This shift is highlighted by the announcement of the Carbon Markets Africa Summit (CMAS) 2026, scheduled for October 13–15 in Kigali, Rwanda.

As global mechanisms like Article 6 advance, African nations are working to establish credible project pipelines and authorization systems. For example, Ghana is currently developing its Article 6 frameworks, while the African Union is implementing the Africa Action Plan on Carbon Markets. To ensure market integrity, AUDA-NEPAD has introduced the African Principles for Equity and Integrity in Carbon Markets, focusing on governance and community benefit-sharing.

The upcoming summit, hosted by the Rwandan Ministry of Environment, aims to connect policymakers, investors, and project developers to facilitate real deal flow. Key participating organizations include the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). The focus remains on moving from theoretical frameworks to scalable, high-integrity transactions that attract international capital.
