Africa Ebola outbreak triggers heightened border surveillance

A significant outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has recorded over 10,000 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths, has prompted several nations to strengthen health security measures. The outbreak, which originated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has spread to Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and France.

In Togo, authorities have implemented systematic thermal screening for travelers at Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport, the Port of Lomé, and various land borders. Similarly, Ghana has installed thermal scanners at Kotoka International Airport and introduced electronic health declaration forms to facilitate contact tracing and risk assessment. Ghana also plans to expand its laboratory testing capacity from three to five facilities.

Health experts from the Africa CDC have warned that the virus could spread to the United Kingdom and other continents if global preparedness and funding are not increased. While the risk of widespread transmission in the United States is considered low, medical facilities in Chicago are reviewing their infectious disease containment protocols.
