Africa Credit Rating Agency to launch in October 2026

The African Union is set to officially launch the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) on October 7, 2026, in Port Louis, Mauritius. The new institution aims to provide credit risk assessments for African states, sub-sovereign entities, and corporations, seeking to establish greater financial sovereignty for the continent.

Proponents of the agency, including Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, argue that current international rating methodologies often fail to account for Africa's specific structural realities, resilience, and growth potential. This perceived inaccuracy has historically led to distorted risk perceptions, higher borrowing costs, and restricted access to international capital markets for African nations.

AfCRA is intended to complement existing global agencies by offering a more nuanced perspective grounded in Africa-specific data and socio-economic conditions. To succeed and gain market trust, the agency must maintain technical credibility, transparency in its methodology, and independence from political influence to ensure it provides fair, rather than merely favorable, ratings.
