Africa Energy Bank established with $5 billion authorized capital
The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO) have formally established the Africa Energy Bank (AEB). The announcement was made during the bank’s inaugural general meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria.
The institution has an authorized capital of $5 billion, intended to address an estimated $200 billion energy investment gap on the continent. This initiative comes as traditional Western lenders increasingly withdraw financing from fossil fuel projects due to climate commitments. The AEB aims to support the entire energy value chain, including exploration, production, transportation, refining, and distribution, while facilitating a just energy transition.
Helmy Ghazi, a former executive at HSBC Egypt, has been appointed as the bank’s first president. While the authorized capital is $5 billion, reports indicate that approximately $500 million has been mobilized so far. The bank is expected to begin making its first investment decisions in 2027, with an initial focus on regional refineries and cross-border pipelines.
