Dangote Refinery secures $2.5bn investment for capacity expansion
Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE (DPRP) has completed a $2.5 billion private placement led by the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC). The transaction, which was 3.7 times oversubscribed, marks the refinery's first equity capital raise involving investors outside its existing ownership structure. The funding will support the company's Vision 2030 expansion plan, which aims to more than double its nameplate capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028.
In addition to the private placement, the refinery is preparing for a retail-focused initial public offering (IPO) in Nigeria, scheduled for October. While reports suggest the company has submitted a $5 billion IPO application to Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission, CEO David Bird stated the offering is intended to be a ‘people’s IPO’ to encourage local participation. Bird noted that the company will wait at least three years to establish proven operational and financial performance before considering an overseas listing in markets such as London.
The Lagos-based integrated complex is valued at approximately $20 billion and currently supplies most of Nigeria’s jet fuel and a significant portion of its gasoline and diesel demand.
