Africa Food Systems Forum addresses food sovereignty in Kigali
At the Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, leaders and researchers discussed strategies for achieving food sovereignty across the continent. The discussions emphasized moving from reactive crisis management to strategic agency to mitigate the impacts of climate change, geopolitical instability, and shifting trade dynamics.
Key insights from the session highlighted that Africa currently spends approximately $75 billion annually on food imports, a figure projected to reach $120 billion by 2050. Experts noted that undernourishment in Africa is often driven by poor distribution and significant post-harvest losses rather than insufficient production. To address existing undernourishment, African agriculture must achieve a growth rate of 6%.
