Africa GreenCo and AXIAN sign 200MW solar power deal in Zambia
Africa GreenCo has signed a 200-megawatt power purchase agreement with the pan-African group AXIAN to procure electricity from the Kudu solar photovoltaic plant currently under development in Zambia. The agreement, finalized at the Energy Forum for Africa 2026 in Lusaka, covers 200 megawatts of alternating current capacity, expected to generate approximately 530 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually.
Africa GreenCo intends to sell the generated power to utilities, mines, and businesses throughout the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). The initiative aims to strengthen regional electricity trade and diversify energy sources in Southern Africa, particularly following a 2024 drought that highlighted the risks of relying heavily on hydroelectric power.
Separately, Solarise Africa has secured a €1 million grant from the Energy and Environment Partnership Trust Fund (EEP Africa) to expand its solar leasing and decentralized renewable energy services into Uganda and Zambia. Supported by €1 million in co-financing from Solarise Africa, the 24-month program aims to install 3 MW of new renewable capacity, including solar photovoltaic systems and battery storage, to assist commercial and industrial businesses in addressing energy reliability and cost issues.
