Africa implements Free Route Airspace to lower flight costs
African aviation is working to reduce travel costs and increase connectivity through the implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). Currently, only 19 percent of intra-African routes offer direct flights, often forcing passengers to transit through European or Middle Eastern hubs. This contrasts sharply with intra-European traffic, which accounts for up to 80 percent of airline traffic.
Implementation of SAATM has faced delays due to national protectionism regarding flag carriers. Additionally, African airlines face high operating costs, including fuel prices 17 percent higher and taxes 12 to 15 percent above the global average. To address these inefficiencies, the continent is adopting a ‘Free Route Airspace’ system. This model allows airlines to utilize user-preferred routes (UPRs) to fly more direct and efficient paths based on weather and traffic conditions, rather than being restricted to fixed airway networks.
