Africa seeks indigenous AI and technological solutions
African entrepreneurs and policymakers are advocating for the development of indigenous technological solutions, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, to avoid a cycle of dependency on foreign imports. Rather than focusing solely on massive frontier models that require immense computing power, the emphasis is shifting toward “sector-strong AI.” These are specialized systems designed to address practical local challenges in agriculture, healthcare, education, logistics, and finance.
Proponents argue that building locally designed technology is essential because solutions created for different cultural, economic, and infrastructural environments may not function effectively in Africa. By developing the capacity to create and own these tools, the continent can harness AI as an economic capability to increase productivity and strengthen national resilience. For instance, deploying AI agents to assist small and medium-sized enterprises with administrative tasks could yield significant annual economic gains per business.
