African agricultural experts call for climate-resilient crop innovation

Agricultural experts and regional organizations are advocating for the transformation of Africa’s indigenous, climate-resilient crops into profitable and nutritious food systems to combat hunger and malnutrition.

At a webinar hosted by Young Professionals for Agricultural Development, Dr. Babafemi Oyewole, CEO of the Pan African Farmers Organisation (PAFO), emphasized that Africa’s vast agricultural biodiversity remains largely neglected despite the continent's high rates of food insecurity. He identified youth involvement as a critical factor in turning these underutilized resources into competitive food products.

Simultaneously, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has urged member states and investors to convert scientific data and technology into practical agricultural solutions. SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi noted that climate shocks and market disruptions continue to threaten regional livelihoods. To mitigate these risks, officials are calling for improved water management, better use of seasonal weather forecasts, and strengthened plant and animal health systems to build resilient agri-food networks.
