African airport capacity grows despite profitability challenges
African aviation markets showed significant shifts in August 2026, characterized by rising seat capacity alongside profitability challenges. Cairo International Airport led the continent in capacity with over 1.85 million seats, followed by Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport.
Data indicates that overall seat capacity across Africa increased by 8.8% compared to the previous year, with domestic flight availability rising by 10.5%. However, the African Airlines Association noted that capacity growth is currently outpacing profitability for many airlines.
In global connectivity rankings, OR Tambo International Airport maintained its position among the world’s 50 most connected airports, ranking 40th in the OAG Megahubs Index. Addis Ababa Bole International Airport entered the top 50, climbing 10 places to rank 50th. Regionally, Johannesburg ranked second in the Middle East and Africa category, trailing only Dubai.
