African central banks advance monetary integration in Nairobi
During the 48th Annual Meetings of the Association of African Central Banks (AACB) held in Nairobi, Kenya, from September 16 to 18, 2026, several key developments were made regarding African financial integration.
Fethi Zouhaier Nouri, Governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia, joined the board of the African Monetary Institute (AMI). Serving as the President of the North Africa sub-region for the 2025-2026 period, Nouri advocated for the creation of an ‘African union of monetary and financial resilience’ as a necessary precursor to a sustainable monetary union on the continent.
Simultaneously, the Central Bank of Congo (BCC), led by Governor André Wameso Nkualoloki, signed an agreement to join the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS). This move aims to interconnect the Democratic Republic of the Congo's national payment system with regional and continental infrastructures, facilitating faster, cheaper, and more traceable cross-border transactions in alignment with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
