African clergy support European Catholic parishes amid priest shortages
European Catholic churches are increasingly relying on African clergy to address local priest shortages. In Italy, approximately 1,130 African priests currently serve in churches as the number of local clergy declines. Father Vincent Souly, who was trained and ordained in Côte d’Ivoire, exemplifies this trend; he has served the mountainous Prato region in Tuscany for 15 years, traveling between villages to conduct masses and visit the sick.
Similarly, in France, between 20% and one-third of active priests come from abroad. The number of new ordinations in France is trending downward, with only 84 new priests expected in 2026 compared to 105 in 2024. This shift marks a reversal of historical missionary dynamics, as clergy from the Global South now play a vital role in maintaining the religious life of European parishes.
