African comedy festivals celebrate milestones in Burkina Faso and Madagascar

The 19th edition of the Ouagadougou International Festival of Laughter and Humor (FIRHO) took place on September 5, 2026, at the CENASA in Burkina Faso. Under the theme ‘Rire sans crédit’, the event celebrated nearly two decades of cultural presence. Promoter Augusta Palenfo noted that the festival's longevity is a result of resilience and public support despite initial skepticism regarding its sustainability.

In Madagascar, the 6th edition of the Jôkôsô Festival du Rire is scheduled for September 18 to 20 in Antananarivo. The festival aims to showcase a diverse selection of Malagasy comedians, including established figures like Francis Turbo and emerging talents. Organizers have opted for a curated selection process rather than open applications to ensure high-quality performances and increased visibility for artists on digital platforms.
