African Commission on Human Rights meets in Dakar
The 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights is being held in Dakar, Senegal, from October 12 to 21, 2026. The session coincides with the 40th anniversary of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Human rights defenders and civil society organizations have raised significant concerns regarding the shrinking of civic space across the continent. Specific issues highlighted include the restriction of freedom of expression, the targeting of journalists and activists, and the rise of transnational repression. In several Sahelian countries, authorities have cited national security and the fight against disinformation as justifications for suspending media outlets and prosecuting activists.
Prior to the main session, an NGO Forum and various training programs focused on digital rights, environmental protection, and the security of defenders. Organizations such as the International Service for Human Rights have specifically pointed to escalating violations in countries including Guinea, Cameroon, and Zambia.
