African cultural festivals celebrate heritage in Lagos and Brussels

The Felabration festival is currently being held in Lagos, running until October 18. Established in 1998 by Yeni Kuti, the event honors the legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the Nigerian musician and political activist who founded Afrobeat. The 2026 edition, themed ‘Who Are You?’, explores the connection between traditional Afrobeat and contemporary Afrobeats, featuring a new dedicated space for Generation Z. Key venues include the New Afrika Shrine and Freedom Park.

In Brussels, the FESTAFRIC 2026 festival took place on October 2 and 3. The event focused on celebrating African roots and the diaspora. A significant portion of the gathering involved an intellectual discussion regarding the inclusion and future of children of immigrants in Europe, addressing how new generations can integrate into European society while preserving their ancestral heritage.
