African delivery apps can learn from Indian startup logistics models

A report by Chukwudi Okeke, published in India Narrative, suggests that home delivery apps in Africa can adopt strategies used by Indian startups to overcome significant logistics challenges.

Many African urban areas, such as informal settlements in Nairobi and Lagos, lack formal postal codes or structured addressing systems. This has historically hindered efficient delivery services. The report highlights that Indian startups successfully navigated similar disorganized environments a decade ago by shifting their focus from physical assets like trucks and warehouses to solving data and trust issues.

To succeed, the report advises African entrepreneurs and policymakers to develop proprietary location intelligence using landmarks, delivery history, and machine learning rather than waiting for government-led addressing reforms. It suggests that governments should act as infrastructure providers to support private sector logistics innovation.
