African Democratic Congress faces internal disputes and election challenges in Nigeria

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is facing various internal and external challenges across Nigeria as political preparations for the 2027 elections intensify. In Oyo State, members staged protests in Ibadan over a disputed governorship ticket, demanding recognition for candidate Dr. Gbemileke Alagbe. Meanwhile, in Cross River State, a party faction has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of uploading an “imposter” candidate, following ongoing legal disputes over leadership and primary elections.

On a national level, Titi Abubakar, wife of ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has begun mobilizing youth support for her husband’s 2027 bid, positioning him as a leader capable of addressing economic issues. The party has also raised alarms regarding political violence following an alleged attack on its members in Kaduna State, calling for increased security and investigations.

Regional developments include the defection of former APC chieftain Adamu Abdullahi Masad to the ADC in Gombe State. Additionally, the Yobe State chapter of the ADC has demanded clarification from the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) regarding the alleged failure to communicate guidelines and timetables for the upcoming 2026 Local Government Council elections.
