African Development Bank approves €100 million loan for Gotion Power Morocco battery gigafactory
The African Development Bank Group approved a €100 million loan to Gotion Power Morocco for the development of Africa’s first integrated lithium‑iron‑phosphate (LFP) battery gigafactory. The Bank also intends to mobilise up to an additional €141 million from financial partners, acting as the mandated lead arranger under the New African Financial Architecture for Development.
The plant will be built in the Rabat‑Salé‑Kénitra Free Trade Zone and will be the first fully integrated battery manufacturer in Africa and the MENA region. It is led by Chinese battery maker Gotion High‑Tech Co Ltd, headquartered in Hefei and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Phase 1 will produce 10 GWh of cells and packs for electric vehicles, with plans to expand to 100 GWh and to be powered primarily by renewable energy.
The project is expected to create more than 600 direct jobs in its initial phase and achieve a 70 percent local industrial integration rate, supporting Morocco’s ambition to become a hub for sustainable mobility and to strengthen the continent’s clean‑energy transition.
