African Development Bank approves $5.1 billion crisis response plan
The African Development Bank Group has approved the Global Energy and Fertilizer Crisis Response Framework (GEFCRF), a financing plan totaling up to US$5.1 billion. The initiative aims to help African nations mitigate the impact of rising energy and fertilizer costs while strengthening food security and economic resilience.
The framework will be funded by an additional US$4.1 billion in lending from the African Development Bank and up to US$960 million from the African Development Fund. This brings the Bank Group’s 2026 lending target to approximately US$12.7 billion. The program is designed to provide immediate assistance to address disruptions caused by global commodity price volatility and trade route instabilities.
The GEFCRF will focus on four primary areas: stabilizing macroeconomic conditions, securing supplies of food, energy, and fertilizer, protecting essential public spending and vulnerable households, and supporting long-term structural reforms. The goal is to reduce Africa’s dependence on volatile external markets and build greater economic autonomy.
