African diaspora drives rise in heritage tourism

A growing movement of heritage tourism is emerging among the African diaspora, as travelers increasingly seek ancestral connections and cultural preservation through international travel.

According to MMGY Travel Intelligence, Black American travelers represented a $145 billion audience in 2025. This demographic is expanding its reach, with individuals and families exploring locations such as Ghana and Portugal, or seeking out specific cultural hubs like Brixton in the United Kingdom.

Travel itineraries are increasingly focused on engaging with Afro-descended communities, including tracing the history of Black artists in Paris or visiting museums built from an Afro-descended perspective. This trend is supported by increased digital connectivity, allowing the global Black population to participate more easily in culturally focused traditions and events.
