African Energy Bank officially launches in Abuja
The African Energy Bank (AEB) has officially commenced operations following an inaugural general meeting held in Abuja. Established by Afreximbank and the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO), the institution is headquartered in a new facility in Nigeria.
The bank launched with an initial capitalization of $5 billion, supported by APPO member states and Afreximbank, which has committed $19 billion in total exposure. Helmy Ghazi has been appointed as the bank’s first president.
The AEB aims to address a significant financing gap in the continent’s energy sector, as traditional international lenders reduce fossil fuel investments. The institution intends to fund the entire energy value chain, including exploration, production, refining, and distribution, to reduce reliance on imported petroleum products. While the bank has started with $5 billion, APPO has outlined a roadmap to mobilize $200 billion for midstream and downstream projects by 2030.
