African faith leaders advocate for debt justice and political rights

Faith leaders and organizations are addressing critical socio-political issues across Africa. At the 6th African Conference on Debt and Development in Nairobi, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) joined other stakeholders to advocate for debt justice. The ZCC emphasized that Africa’s debt crisis impacts essential services like healthcare and education, calling for transparent and accountable debt resolution processes, particularly for Zimbabwe.

In Zambia, the Anglican Church of Southern Africa has expressed deep concern regarding the detention of opposition figures following a disputed election. Among those detained is Bishop Trevor Mwamba, leader of the United National Independence Party (UNIP). The church, echoing calls from the United Nations and the African Union, has appealed to Zambian authorities to respect due process and ensure detainees have access to basic human necessities while calling for national reconciliation.
