African financial institutions seek to bridge development funding gap

African financial leaders are pursuing strategies to address the continent's estimated $400 billion annual development financing deficit. At the African Financial Summit (AFIS 2026) in Luanda, Angola, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will advocate for mobilizing domestic African capital as a primary solution. A key focus will be the New African Financial Architecture for Development (NAFAD) initiative, designed to unlock large-scale internal resources.

In a separate effort to enhance regional investment, a capital dialogue held in Bangkok aimed to convert trade relations between West Africa and Asia into direct investment. Participants, including representatives from the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) and central bank governors from Nigeria and Ghana, are working toward an operational financing agreement worth over $1 billion. This initiative seeks to direct Asian capital toward West African infrastructure, energy, and industrial sectors, addressing the current imbalance where financial flows lag behind the region's significant trade volume with Asia.
