African football leaders advocate for coaching education and autonomy
Football leaders in Africa are emphasizing the need for improved coaching standards and greater professional autonomy. In Nigeria, Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen has endorsed the Ogun State Football Association’s initiative to host a CAF D Coaching Course. Eguavoen noted that modern football requires structured learning and specialized knowledge beyond mere experience, particularly at the grassroots level where coaches shape the technical abilities and discipline of young players.
Separately, former Liberian national team coach Ansumana Keita has called for African football administrators to grant coaches more authority and trust. Keita warned that administrative interference in tactical decisions and player selection undermines long-term team development. He argued that federations must respect the boundary between administration and technical management to allow coaches the time and independence necessary to build competitive squads.
