African health priorities shift toward preventative care
A reflection on African communal priorities highlights a growing contradiction between the significant resources mobilized for funerals and the lack of investment in preventative health measures. While funerals serve as powerful moments of collective remembrance and community organization, there is a noted difficulty in mobilizing similar devotion for nutrition, health screenings, and lifestyle changes that could prevent illness.
This shift in focus is critical as Africa undergoes a health transition. In 2000, noncommunicable diseases—including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory illness—accounted for approximately one-quarter of deaths in the World Health Organization’s African Region. By 2019, this figure had increased significantly, underscoring the urgent need to prioritize preventative care and access to nutritious food.
