African human rights and labor forums convene in Dakar
Representatives from twelve African nations recently gathered in Dakar, Senegal, for a regional forum focused on protecting domestic workers. The International Labour Organization (ILO) highlighted that millions of workers on the continent, the vast majority of whom are women, operate without legal protection or social security. Discussions centered on regularizing the informal sector, strengthening social dialogue, and addressing the vulnerability of minors employed in domestic work.
Simultaneously, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) concluded its 89th ordinary session in Dakar. Commission President Idrissa Sow commended Mauritius, Zambia, and Guinea-Bissau for submitting periodic reports regarding their human rights obligations under the African Charter. While noting progress, the Commission reported significant challenges in compliance across the continent, with several nations lagging behind in submitting required reports to evaluate the protection of civil rights.
