African innovators deploy AI for health and education

Innovators across Africa are utilizing artificial intelligence to address critical gaps in healthcare and education. In Uganda, Dr. Rose Nakasi and her team at the Makerere AI Health Lab are developing AI-powered diagnostic tools. By combining microscopes and smartphones via 3D-printable adapters, the system automates the detection of pathogens related to malaria, tuberculosis, and cervical cancer, aiming to provide faster and more accurate results in facilities with limited laboratory expertise.

In the education sector, Injini has launched a $125,000 AI EdTech venture builder program targeting nine Southern African countries. Supported by Coefficient Giving, the initiative seeks to develop AI-powered educational products designed by individuals with direct classroom experience. The program will select 12 teams to undergo a build phase, with five teams eventually receiving $25,000 in equity-free seed funding to support their minimum viable products.
